5 Ways to Pray for Your Kids

A few years ago I mentioned to a friend how my dad always prayed for me when I was sick. She was shocked. She said her dad had never prayed out loud for her. I was surprised because prayer was the norm at my house growing up. That conversation made me think about what I want the norm to be for my kids. I want them to know that I pray for them, that I trust God to look out for them. That got me thinking about how I can pray for my kids more. So I’ve come up with some different ways to add more prayer for them into my daily life. Keep reading for 5 ways to pray for your kids throughout your day!

Our kids face so many different pressures on a daily basis. We can’t always be there to help them but as parents we have the great honor of lifting them up to God in prayer. The bible encourages us to pray continuously and yet I know how busy we all can be. I also know that if we don’t teach them to believe and trust in God the world is eager to teach them not to. Praying for our children is so very important!

1. Use their birthday and pray for them at the corresponding time each day.

For instance if your child’s birthday is November 21 you would pray for them at 11:21 each day. Set a reminder on your phone to pop up each day at that time. That way if you are busy when the time rolls around you will see the reminder later and can say a quick prayer for them then.

2. Use a list of godly character/virtues and pray one over them each day of the month.

There are many of these lists that can be found on Pinterest or by googling “31 virtues”. You can always make your own as well. If you don’t want to do the work I’ve made one for you! To get your free Biblical Virtues Bookmark fill out the form below.

3. Use a prayer journal.

Journals are a great way to keep track of prayers for your children. You can get the kids involved by asking them how you can pray for them. Or let them write in the journal too. Then later you can go back and see how God answered your prayers, how great is that?

4. Pray with them before they go to school.

Praying out loud with your children is an excellent way to show your heart to them. In a world that bombards us with all the ways we don’t measure up speaking a blessing over them each day is a powerful thing to do.

This time can be used to encourage your children to pray out loud for others. Praying out loud can be uncomfortable and takes some practice! The more we can model this as parents the more they will consider it a normal thing.

5. Pick one bible verse for the year and pray it over your child daily.

A few years ago my family all memorized 2 Tim 1:7 (New King James Version)

“For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love, and of a sound mind.”

At the time this was the perfect verse for everyone. One of my children was very timid, another needed to be a little more kind, and the third was struggling with test anxiety. That year I prayed that verse over and over for them! It’s still a verse I pull out when I know one of them is struggling.

Prayer changes things (or changes us)! We provide a powerful example for our kids to follow when they know we pray for them daily. That’s the kind of legacy I want to leave for my kids, how about you?

As always I welcome any comments you have. I would love to hear from you.
