Book Recommendations by a 15 year old boy
My fifteen-year-old son (I’ll call him Thor) loves to read. Well, he loves to read when he’s not allowed to watch TV or be on the computer! Trying to find good books for teen boys can be a challenge. So I asked him the other day to give me a list of his book recommendations.
He has been an avid reader since third grade when he discovered the “Harry Potter” series by J.K. Rowland. He started reading off of my bookshelf in the last year which has been fun. He has a serious bent toward the fantasy genre but there are a few other kinds of books on the list.
Here are his book recommendations:

Ranger’s Apprentice Series by John Flanagan:
This is a 12 book series that will keep your child reading for some time. My son was thrilled each time a new book was released that added to this story line. The Ruins of Gorlan (The Ranger’s Apprentice, Book 1)
Brotherband Series by John Flanagan:
This is a 7 book series. He enjoyed this series as much or more than the Ranger’s Apprentice series. The Caldera (The Brotherband Chronicles)
Peter and the Starcatchers Series by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson:
This 5 book series is about how Peter Pan gets his start. Fans of the Peter Pan story will find this a fun read. Peter and the Starcatchers
Thr3e by Ted Dekker:
Thr3e was the first thriller my teen read and he loved it! I will ruin the story line if I say much more! Thr3e
Leviathan by James Byron Huggins:
Thor enjoyed the author’s blend of old mythology and new military themes in this book. Leviathan
Ranger’s Apprentice: The Early Years by John Flanagan:
As you can see this is one of Thor’s favorite authors. The Tournament at Gorlan (Ranger’s Apprentice: The Early Years Book 1)
Narnia Series by C.S. Lewis:
Thor had to read these books before he could watch the movies. I didn’t stumble across these books until I was an adult. I felt like I had been robbed in my childhood! Thor and I agree everyone should read this series. The Chronicles of Narnia Boxed Set
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien:
This tale is about an unassuming hero going on a grand adventure. Be sure to read this before you watch the movies! The Hobbit
The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown:
Thor read this book in a class at school. It was by far one of his favorites from last year. At school they used the young readers adaptation. The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics
Monster by Frank Peretti:
This story is set in our area of the world. Thor grabbed this one off of my bookshelf but it has migrated to his own collection. Monster
The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini:
This 4 book series is about Dragons. Eragon (Inheritance, Book 1)
Hunger Games Triology by Suzanne Collins:
This series has 3 books. We both recommend reading the books before watching the movies. The Hunger Games (Book 1)
There you have it! That’s the list of book recommendations. I hope your teen boy enjoys them as much as mine did.
